Why NUONEA?
Better healthcare, better lives
A key issue in the prevention of maternal deaths is the ability to use a skilled attendant at birth. In 2016, 78 percent of live births were skilled-assisted. However, in Sub-Saharan Africa, the equivalent rate was only 53 percent. Effective interventions even at reasonable costs could prevent most maternal deaths, life-threatening morbidity and complications.
The goal in maternity care is not only to avoid morbidity and mortality, but also improve the health and well-being of girls, women and their families. In addition to the lack of resources, the health care system in many developing countries does not have evidence-based and current data about the actions and processes.
Health information systems (HIS) represent a significant investment for organizations that require evidence for accountability and informed decision-making. Essentially a proper HIS generates reliable information about population health service needs and individual care needs, the latter so that clients receive continuity of care for their health issues, no matter how many providers are involved. Patients who receive continuity of care have better healthcare outcomes, higher satisfaction rates, and the health care they receive is more cost-effective.
Continuity of care requires data sources: a system to collect and record client information, a system to make this information available to providers within and outside of the originating practice, and a system to follow-up with clients who have been referred to other providers and with those who have missed appointments.
